“I was sitting in a tiny room and had just lit up a joint when all of a sudden the room expanded into a huge auditorium. I found myself sitting in the very top bleachers watching God and the devil at the bottom… debating over me. Every argument the devil used to convince God that I belonged to him was met by a response from God that would shut the devil up.” Jim watched the devil bring accusation after accusation against him, but again and again God would silence the devil. All at once, Jim was back in his little room, straight and stone cold sober. As he tried to make sense of what had just happened he heard a voice say, “Jim, you have a short time to decide!”
Jim Ayer hadn’t always been a drug-dealing thief and alcoholic. In fact, he was a good student with a strong work ethic which earned him a lot of money. Jim had a hot car and cool stuff so people assumed his parents got it all for him, when in fact he paid for everything himself. Then one day someone introduced him to marijuana… his life took a whole different turn from there.
After a couple years of college, it came down to either his grades staying high or him staying high. He chose himself… quitting school and work. But the perfect replacement was dealing drugs. He was great at sales, and he could convince just about anyone to buy from him. He even convinced his sweet, clean-living girlfriend—whom he would eventually marry—to start using drugs.
One night, after partying with friends and after purchasing some drugs, they headed home. Jim was so high he couldn’t even drive. As Jim brought the drugs inside his home, his wife brought their baby son in. It was a pitiful sight! Not even the presence of their innocent baby could break the strong chain of addiction! Just then, as Jim was walking to his bedroom to put the drugs away, he heard that voice say, “Jim, tonight is your last night to decide!”
Jim said, “It was like the crossroads of eternity were being presented to me. At that moment, my destiny was in my own hands.” He grabbed all the drugs and told his wife he needed to get rid of them. He walked into the bathroom and flushed everything down the toilet. Jim
had flushed drugs down the toilet before when he thought the knock on the door was from the cops, but this time it was a knock on his heart. “The moment,” he said, “I flushed the drugs down, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders—a weight I never realized I had.”
He grabbed hold of the cold, white porcelain toilet bowl and cried with joy. He turned to the side, his wife was standing in the doorway crying too. God had reached them both. Jim asked his wife to join him in a prayer, “God, I’m sorry it took so long.” It wasn’t a long prayer, but they knew God heard it and was pleased with their decision.
Sometime after that pivotal moment, Jim saw an advertisement on TV for the beautiful blue “The Bible Story” book set for children. Since he didn’t want his baby boy to go through what he had, he called the number and ordered the set. Although his son was too young to even turn the pages, Jim decided to start reading them himself. The more he read, the more he fell in love with the God of love revealed through all the different stories.
He began reading his Bible and praying. It was an all-consuming desire that burned within him. He wanted to learn all he could from God’s word. After a year-long search, he was led to a church that believed what the Bible taught. He loved every moment of his life with Christ, but before long, imperceptibly, Jim started reading his Bible less and less. His prayer time became lifeless, and when an offer came to become the pastor of a church, instead of listening to God’s leading, he chose his own way.
Jim got into real estate and politics, which made him many friends in Congress. He had his own radio talk show and kept himself occupied, drowning out his conscience. Soon, to all outward appearances, he had it made. He was wealthy and successful. Sure, he would still preach an occasional sermon at church to appease his conscience, but he had no real connection with God.
After running from God for so long, while sitting at church one day, he heard the voice. He hadn’t heard that voice in a long time, but it told him of his true condition. At that moment, he realized that even while doing a lot of good things, being an “outstanding citizen” in the community, having all kinds of money, he was still lost!
He and a friend discussed starting a Bible study group, and so their journey began. During the opening night, a study guide was used which specifically asked for a commitment-45 minutes in prayer and Bible study every day. Everyone signed the commitment but Jim. He reasoned, “I’m too important! I have so much going on between my businesses and family, I’m just way too busy to commit so much time each day.” The evening went on and Jim struggled as he resisted signing the commitment. As the study was coming to an end, Jim finally surrendered to God, turned the page over and signed it.
Leaving church, the following week, Jim told his wife, “Honey, we need to do something for God.” They agreed to go on a mission trip to South America. One day as Jim was laying block with some of the other volunteers, one of his new friends said, “Jim, just imagine we are the answer to so many prayers.” Jim cried as he was overwhelmed by the thought that God could use him to answer someone’s prayers. They had truly connected to God, once again.
Jim was thrilled at the second chance he had been given. He was amazed how much time he actually had to study and pray once he stopped watching so much TV—getting rid of all the filth that was piling up between him and God. His recommitment to God has led him and wife on a thrilling journey that has taken them around the world sharing the news that Jesus Christ is their best Friend. Jim was twice lost, and twice found.
Maybe you’re not a thief or a drug dealer, in fact you could be an upstanding church member. But have you wandered far from God in your heart? Return to your Father’s house. He invites you, saying, “Return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.” God is the God of second chances, and He’s offering that chance to you. Give Him your whole heart, today!
